I started drinking kombucha about a year ago. For those of you who don't know what it is, (and I don't say this to be a know it all asshole, it's just that everywhere I go, people ask me "what is that?") it's a fermented, carbonated tea that is good for your digestive health. It's live and raw, and contains probiotics, a healthy bacteria (just like the culture in yogurt.)
I was drinking a bottle of it per day, and after awhile the price went from $2.50/bottle to $4/bottle. The economics nerd in me realized this as a real life example of the laws of supply and demand, and I geeked out
over it for a minute, and then I realized that my kombucha habit was going to cost around $1400/year.
After some research I decided to start brewing my own. Bryan bought me a kit, and I got started, only I didn't do enough research, and I killed my very first scoby. OOPS. (scoby is an acronym for symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast.)
I bought a second scoby, and read up on why my first one started growing mold (it was because I stored it in a dark room. DUH.) And I've been brewing happily ever since. Now I have two batches brewing, and I have more kombucha than I even know what to do with.
After mailing a scoby to a friend overseas, I decided I was going to put together a kit because it's really cheap and easy to make. (It costs about $0.75/bottle to make after your first batch!) So, I wrote up a very extensive list of instructions and tips, and listed them in my etsy shop.
Along with the instructions, each kit contains a scoby (the bacteria culture) and 10 bags of tea. Or if you just want the scoby & the instructions, I have an option for that too. If you're interested in purchasing one, here is a link.
